Planning Your Visit

How far in advance do we need to arrange a visit?

Individual researchers may arrange to visit the Archives in person by booking an appointment through the Archives (instructions found here) or by reaching out to HICR directly. Appointments may be made up to 24 hours in advance or drop-in appointments are welcomed Tuesday through Friday between 1 and 5 p.m. Appointments are best to ensure any of your questions may be answered and all your desired materials may be pulled for viewing.

For groups, as much notice as possible is preferable, as depending on the group size, we may be able to accommodate a private visit in the research room. We ask for 48-hours notice minimum.

What items may we bring to the research room?

You are welcome to bring laptops, notebooks, pencils cameras and phones. No food, drinks, gum, or pens are permitted in the research room.

Wifi is available.

May materials be brought to my community?

Please reach out to HICR to discuss this possibility.

What does it cost to visit the Whyte?

All Indigenous visitors have free admission to the Whyte.

Additional fee information may be found here.

What size of group can be accommodated?

The Archives may accommodate up to 10 visitors at one time, however, we have previously accommodated more by rotating visitors in larger groups. For groups, we may be able to accommodate a private research room visit that best suits your groups availability, in which the tables may be arranged to allow for more collaborative work.

May we have access to copies of the documents or photographs we view?

Yes! We are more than happy to provide physical and/or digital copies of documents and photographs of interest. Indigenous materials are typically available to Indigenous groups and individuals at no cost, in accordance with the Whyte's Permission for Use of Indigenous-Related Materials Application.

How can I research and select materials to view for my visit?

Before visiting the Archives, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the collection through the online database. A thorough guide to navigating the Indigenous materials is available here.

What days of the week are visits available?

The research room is open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Fridays. With adequate appointment notice, a visit outside of these hours may be accommodated.
